BE SOMEONE DIFFERENT, a short story by Cindy Longchamp

Be someone different.

     How we can introduce a horrible story like that?  We can’t, so we will do that in a simple way.

      The scene took place during the winter of 1958 in a school which name was Jean-Baptiste Drouet. The teacher of Physics, Mr.Leon was totally crazy and very strange. He was always wearing a shirt with blue trousers, brown shoes and he had three pens in the pocket of his shirt, a big pair of glasses on his nose showing those small eyes of mouse and he always had chalk in his hair. Sometimes he stopped his class and he tried to think about what he was going to say but these thoughts lasted more than thirty minutes. That’s why every pupil wanted to kill themselves and the teacher at the same time.

Like every class, there was a cleverer pupil and a popular pupil. Djeff was the cleverest, he was tall and big, he had brown hair, blue eyes, small lips and a big nose. He always carried black jeans and pullovers and he had mountain shoes. He was not really ugly but not beautiful either. Mickael was the most famous, that boy was so beautiful, he had a perfect face like a Greek god. Everything was so perfect, perfect nose, sensual lips, green eyes and blond hair. He carried fashionable clothes and he tried to be nice and friendly with everybody to hide that he was a perfect idiot. Djeff was angry at Mickael, he could no longer bear the humiliation; sometimes he dreamed that he killed all those who laughed at him but it was just a dream even if one day an idea crossed his mind.

It was during a chemistry class, Djeff was sitting next to the windows and near those windows there were computers, he was in front of one of those computers and he was working when he received something on his head which came from Mickael. Suddenly, Djeff took a pair of scissors and he got up; everybody looked at him, he approached the teacher then he planted the pair of scissors in his stomach and declared to the class:

“ Everyone sit down… and shut up or I kill you! “

All pupils were very shocked because Djeff was so nice even if he didn’t speak, he had never had problems at school, he was too serious to do something similar.

Suddenly, he closed the door, he returned towards the teacher to stab him again even though the teacher was already bleeding a lot. After Djeff decided to take a chalk and to write hard on the board to make a horrible noise for the teeth of the victims. Then after that small game, he looked at the pupils and chose ten of them. He told those hostages to leave that room of torture and he added:

“You are fortunate, you are free now, go out of the school or I will kill you without hesitating! “

Those ten survivors were very happy but at the same time sad and anxious for that friends; of course, Mickael wasn’t among those ten survivors. Only eleven hostages remained prisoners of that unbearable tension. Minutes looked like hours and it killed everybody little by little. In the meantime, Mickael was trying to make something to help his friends…

“Hey Djeff! Everyone knows that you are angry at me therefore leave the others and keep me here… “

Djeff was surprised and he retorted:

“Errrr… you are cleverer than I believed. Okay, I keep you, you and your girlfriend. I want to see you suffer!”

Mickael really liked Alisson, his girlfriend…

 “You not… You cannot do that... YOU ARE A MONSTER! Please… Leave her.” he retorted, with anger and stress. 

Djeff was happy to see Mickael reacting like that. He didn’t answer and told the rest of the hostages to leave quickly except Mickael and Alisson. There remained no more than two first choice victims. Alisson tried to be courageous to hide her fright, she was beautiful, she had blond hair, blue eyes, she was tall, good-looking but she wasn’t clever like her boyfriend, she was in love with him    « They had been born to be together »; famous, good looking but idiots.

In the past, Djeff had loved Alisson but she told him that he was seedy. He was sad, his heart was broken at that instant and even more when he discovered that she was the new girlfriend of his enemy. These elements can explain the anger of Djeff against Mickael. The perfect student realized that he was alone with the person that he hated the most and he could do what he wanted but his heart sent him a message and he had understood that he had to leave Alisson, his anger wasn’t against her but against her boyfriend then he forced her to leave the class. First, she refused because of her love for Mickael but after the latter told her all his feelings, he looked at her in the eyes to convey a message… “Help, go for help!” that was the message and his girlfriend had understood it but she was scared, she didn’t want to go because she was petrified at the idea of no seeing Mickael again. Djeff looked at them funnily but he had a heart therefore he let those two lovers say goodbye, yes, he had decided to kill Mickael and himself because he knew that he couldn’t live with the idea that he had killed someone even if he hated this person.

All of a sudden, Alisson ran out of the class, Djeff was surprised and sad because he had hurt her, he knew that point and that made him sad because he had always liked her. Alisson was trying to find help when she heard gunshots and then nothing more… She came back behind the door of the class and she begged:

“Mickael, Mickael… Mickael please, answer me…”

If she had been able to enter, she would have made it but the door was locked up. She asked an answer again and again, shouting… but nobody answered. A few minutes after, somebody opened the door… And it was Mikael, he was covered with blood, he was seriously hurt. She took him in her arms and called for help.

Nowadays, we still don’t know what happened because Djeff was killed    (Mickael stabbed him with the pair of scissors in his heart) but Djeff had the time to cut the tongue and hands of Mikael before killing him.

Mickael is a survivor of that horrible story but how?!

But a good point of that story, Mickael will not say bad things about his friends now!
